This song actually makes me really really sad. It’s so hard to find American Indian culture nowadays. My family tried to visit a reservation that my family’s visited for generations to experience the culture, but it’s not been replaced by a casino. They have such amazing stories and history, it’s a shame that we’re losing it.

Being part American and having a Apache Chief as my great great great father. I honestly don’t care what happened in the past, and I actually support the Europeans taking this land as their own. It’s not like the Indians were doing anything important with it besides making more huts and fighting each other.

I totally agree with your last point. So the first thing you can do to make that right is to listen to the group of people that is telling you, “You’re not representing our group of people as though they are actual people”. Then after you actually listen to that group, you can consider it, before dismissing it. Thanks for understanding.

  70. Igamikun
    12-03-12

You’re the one showing a point of willful ignorance because you automatically think because people are white they’re babied and live joyous carefree lives.
I’d also like to hear how I’m being racist by saying a whole nation has fallen to greed and judging the common man like they were every person who hurt their ancestors?
Everybody is just looking for an enemy instead of getting over things that realistically don’t even affect them because it was all in the past and doing so with foul reasoning

  73. ralphyetmore
    12-02-12

Aw. Poor white guy. Give me a break. Thanks for demonstrating not only your racism, but your WILLFUL ignorance. Take care.

  74. Matthew Wilson
    12-02-12

If modern Native Americans feel that two white guys rapping about their dead past somehow overshadows or contributes to an inaccurate picture of the present, then I would say that the Native American community needs to speak up. Vine Deloria and Joy Harjo provide brilliant insight into the modern Native American spirit. But a handful of authors/creatives cannot carry a whole diverse nation.
I would love to hear more voice, more words from modern Native Americans.

  75. Igamikun
    12-02-12

Right cause people are forced to live on reservations at this point in time. I’m more in support of equalism which most people should be.
Holding grudges and being racist at this point in time because of dealings with out ancestors and not the current generation of people doesn’t do anybody any good. Honestly at this point being white is a pretty negative thing, and there aren’t really priveleges. Furthering our society would require tossing all that baggage out the window.

  76. Matthew Wilson
    12-02-12

This video is not depicting Native Americans today! It provides info about Native Americans in a historical context. And yes, history does pave a roadmap to modern Native American culture, but that is simply not the intention or point of the video. That does not make the video racist as a result.
And because you “ARE STILL HERE” that means it is not the place of these authors to do a song about you. YOU CAN DO THAT! Everyone can talk about dead people. The living can speak on their own behalf.

  77. ralphyetmore
    12-02-12

Oh wow. So Injuns should just shut up about getting forced to live in reservations, huh? I guess Niggers shouldn’t be so uppity about all that slave bullshit either, cuz it’s in the past, right?

Using the race card for a priviledged class is so obscenely small-minded I can’t imagine you need an explination for the problems with it. But then again, maybe you do since you’re trying it here.

  78. dawsonic2019
    12-02-12

    i subbed thanks

  79. Igamikun
    12-02-12

You’re the problem. It’s a grudge against people with a color of skin. There are plenty of people living in this country who’s ancestors had nothing to do with the British, Europeans, and Spanish that came and took over the land.
But hey they’re all white right? So they must be evil, and it’s all their faults.
Not every white person did something against the natives of the land, the worst thing most of them did was move here from persecution in their own lands.

    12-02-12

your a funny guy.. why are you upset that we are doing the same thing to you guys that you guys did to us for like forever?.. now were the ones getting you drunk and taking your money!! lmao

  85. ralphyetmore
    12-02-12

It’s racist exactly BECAUSE it never mentions the American Indian as an actual living droup of diverse people. That is the point. According to this post, Indians are nothing more than a collection of exterior traits with no context, no understanding, no meaning.

Imagine if this same approach were geared to Black Americans. Make every mention of them 150 years old. Mention the spirituals. Mention the housing. Say little or nothing about the conflicts or the people.

    NOW do you get it?

  86. Santiago Rivers
    12-02-12

I saw another comment that says “We all don’t have totem poles …” I kind of thought that was exactly their point. We had many different tribes with many varied different customs. How so many missed that point confuses me.
So instead of complaining, I say thank you to them. And as I said before, this is well intentioned and excellently done!

  87. Santiago Rivers
    12-02-12

What is funny to me is that people seem so focused on that this song doesn’t describe us as a people now, and even bestowing the word “racist,” which elicits so much emotion, on them for not mentioning that we are “doctors, lawyers and teachers now.” These guys write about history. That’s like if they did a song about Egypt or Greece and an Egyptian or Greek getting upset that they focused on the time of the pyramids or the Parthenon and labeling them currently as a people.

  88. Santiago Rivers
    12-02-12

This is a well intentioned and also very well done!
This is a very effective piece in reminding whites that we have a history and that we were on these lands thriving when they arrived. This reminds whites that we should not be just lumped together as “Indians.” Rather, we, Native Americans, come from a vast array of tribes, each with our own traditions and culture. I understand that it would have been too difficult to mention all our tribes and am not offended that mine was not.

  89. WymanSalt
    12-02-12

Oh those, idk there is so much of them. Sometimes I like to go to Vegas and waste all my money. LOL Plus why don’t you go to one and find out so you don’t have to ask people…. xD

  90. Matthew Wilson
    12-02-12

And racist would be a majority community (like whites) referring to Native Americans as “savages” or silencing the Native American community (which, admittedly, has been done in the past) or destroying/re-writing the memory of their past.

  91. Matthew Wilson
    12-02-12

It is past-tense because is it HISTORICAL in nature. The whole “well, what about us now!” cry is certainly not invalid, but that isn’t the point of the video. For those living NOW, they can represent themselves.
And I am not sure where this is racist by definition. It does not in any way infer inferiority. Every definition of racism is contingent on the inference of a superior/inferior relationship of one race to another.
I am not convinced that this video does that.

  93. Igamikun

Sad to have Native American lineage. When you look at what 75% of the tribes are doing nowadays. My local community has had land bought up by the casinos and since they are a sovereign nation they don’t pay land tax and the roads are all crumbling with no money to pay for it.
Most are racist towards Whites, and Mexicans (which makes no sense, since all Mexicans are is Natives of southern regions). All in all the modern day “Native American is, is a money grubber who thinks everybody owes them.

A 6 minute video absolutely does NOT have to be broad or general. This video doesn’t say anything that a grade school kid couldn’t tell you. You can tell a GOOD specific story in 6 minutes… if you have the talent and heart to do it. Also, it’s obvious that this was NOT intended as an anthropological overview. This is a project that lacks of effort and focus, thereby coming off as distasteful since it claims to be passionate about its subject while it demonstrates that it isn’t.

I don’t like being called indian at all even native indian or american indian. Indians are from indian. The Columbus ass hole sailed her thought it was india, found out he was wrong and still decided to call us indians… NO I’m not a india. There’s nothing wrong with first nations but it doesn’t apply to me because it only reefers to Canadians aboriginals. I think aboriginal is fine too. That’s my personal opinion. A lot of Natives cal themselves indian.

The terms used to refer to Native Americans have been controversial. According to a 1995 U.S. Census Bureau set of home interviews, most of the respondents with an expressed preference refer to themselves as American Indians (or simply Indians).

Fun fact: after a plague wiped out 75% of the native american population (before white settlers arrived) the enormous amount of trees that regrew without native americans cutting them down actually lowered the temperature of the entire planet by a couple of degrees.

i think its a little ironic that in a video supposedly celebrating Native American life before the European conquest at 1:54 they show individuals hunting buffalo on horses….which were introduced by Europeans…

What kind of culture do we live in? I’m part Cherokee, Irish, German and some other european races. I sense the shame and pain of our past too well. What bothers me the most right now is not being sure if anything has changed. Seems all that has changed is we bring bigger guns along with our false hopes to cultures we don’t understand trying to change them. Everything changes though and feeling crappy about the past is useless.

I can’t speak for native indians but to me imo using a so called “music” style that originates from the ghetto desicrates the heritage and honor of the Native American Indian nations. I gave it a chance though. The point of the song is good, the medium and method on the other hand is horrific.

As great as their intentions were towards educating people about current Native American culture, this video speaks to the stereotype of Native Americans living in TeePee’s and using Totem Poles and being uncivilized by making their own things from nature and whatnot. Although that may be the case for some tribes, it wasn’t the case for all and it’s important to remember that not all tribes were the same. When educating people, we must remember diversity among the tribes. Not all were like this.

The impression I get is that you’re emphasizing that Native Americans had diverse, successful societies before the Europeans got here. Given that, I found the frequent inclusion of the horse, which came over with the Europeans, to be very ironic.
